Sotto la regia del
maestro del cinema d'azione di Hong Kong Ringo Lam, autore nel 1987 di quel Lung fu fong wan che, internazionalmente
conosciuto come City on fire, pare sia stato tra i lungometraggi ispiratori de Le iene di Quentin Tarantino, il colosso
belga Jean-Claude Van Damme - protagonista di Senza esclusione di colpi (1988) di Newt Arnold e de I nuovi eroi (1992)
di Roland Emmerich - aveva già interpretato nel 1996 Maximum risk, accanto alla Natasha Henstridge dei primi tre
Species, e, cinque anni dopo, il fantascientifico The replicant.
In questo caso, sempre diretto da Lam (tra
l'altro, si tratta dell'ultima collaborazione artistica tra i due), lo troviamo nei panni del pacifico ingegnere
statunitense Kyle LeBlanc, il quale, condannato all'ergastolo per l'uccisione di uno spietato mafioso che ha brutalmente
assassinato sua moglie, finisce rinchiuso in un terrificante carcere russo, dove riesce a diventare campione di tornei
clandestini di lotta tra detenuti.
Mentre cerca di sfuggire ai demoni interiori e di redimersi dalla mostruosa
violenza dell'inferno in cui è caduto, tra galeotti tanto malvagi quanto pericolosi e tutt'altro che lodevoli
rappresentanti della giustizia.

In Hell is a 2003 American action film directed by Ringo Lam, starring
Jean-Claude Van Damme and Lawrence Taylor. It is the third collaboration between Van Damme and Hong Kong filmmaker Ringo
Lam.

Inside the most corrupt prison in Europe's Eastern Block, the warden pits prisoners against each other
in fights to the death for profit. The brutality transforms the inmates into dreaded monsters. The contender is Kyle
LeBlanc (Jean-Claude Van Damme, "Derailed"), who is sentenced to life for killing his wife's murderer. Facing the
brutality, Kyle starts to become one of the monsters he dispises, but his savage rage may be what saves his life.
